Chapter Twelve

Our destination isn’t a random shack in the middle of nowhere this time. Instead, a small town unfolds, seemingly out of thin air, as the dirt road gives way to one more maintained. What few buildings we pass sport colorful exteriors, and stray dogs dart through the alleyways. The glimpse of normalcy is a stark reminder of everything I’ve lost during this hellish ordeal.

Far too soon, the small town flits by, yielding to more desert and endless road. Above, the sun begins to rise, painting the horizon in shades of pink and amber before igniting the landscape entirely in a soft golden glow. It hits me how beautiful this part of the world is, though ragged and inhospitable.

Much like the man beside me.

It’s been hours since we last spoke, but I resist the urge to prod him for more information—like where the hell we’re headed exactly. Soon, my questions are answered for me as an industrial complex appears on the horizon.

DELCORP DEPOT reads the black lettering on a rusted sign affixed to a barbed-wire fence lining the road. Three large brick warehouse-style buildings form a row, with an asphalt parking lot full of trucks visible behind them.

Even if Domino wasn’t tense beside me, I’d sense something was off with this place. A sinister aura emanates from the property. Every muscle in my body stiffens—especially when I glimpse a familiar vehicle parked alongside the gate.

“Get ready,” Domino warns. “Remember what I told you and follow my lead. Trust me.”

Trust him. I don’t know whether to laugh or take those words at face value, now that the time to put them to the test has come. It isn’t like I have much of a choice.

If this really is an ambush, the key players are already in place. Mick and Ralph stand beside another man who motions for us to stop. As Domino complies, rolling down the window, the third man calls, “Bring it around the back for loading.”

“As for the little Missy, she can step out and join us,” Ralph adds, his smile revealing several missing teeth. “Then we can both get right on our way.”

Domino doesn’t move for so long that I start to question if he’ll drive off entirely. Then, without a word, he leans over me, and shoves open the door on my end.

“Get out.” His tone is low, his gaze averted. My belly quivers. Am I pathetic for wanting reassurance? A look. A glance. Anything.

“Can we get a move on?” Mick snaps, his impatience palpable.

I jolt to awareness and realize that all eyes are on me. Cautiously, I descend from my seat. On shaking legs, I approach the three men, feeling the back of my neck prickle with awareness.

I turn to find Domino watching me, and I swear something unspoken passes between us.

Encouragement?

If so, he hides it well. Outwardly, his expression is stone. When the unfamiliar man gestures him onward, he drives, and my stomach sinks. If the worst comes to pass, this might be the last time I ever see him.
